Friday, September 30th, is the 80th anniversary of the founding of Medical Mission Sisters. Our Sisters and associates around the world are commemorating this special day in a variety of ways. In North America, our Sisters who live in the western and southwest areas of the U.S. are gathering for a retreat in Orange, California, on Foundation Day. In Philadelphia, we are celebrating at our 10:00 a.m. Liturgy on Sunday, October 2nd.

Sister Yumiko Nobue, who was born and raised in Japan, spoke at the August Rotary International Meeting in Patna, India, on the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She shared the stories of many who were not killed, but whose lives were forever changed by the damages inflicted. Concluding with a prayer for world peace, Sister Yumiko said, "Let us commit ourselves once again to be a peace maker wherever we are in our day-to-day life, with a strong conviction that peace is possible in our world." The U.N.'s International Day of Peace is September 21st.

The Natural Family Planning Center of Washington, D.C, founded and directed by Sister-Doctor Miriam Paul (Hanna) Klaus, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of TeenSTAR (Sexuality Teaching in the context of Adult Responsibility) on Sunday, September 18th. In addition to educating teens (850 attended the workshops at World Youth Day in Germany), the Center has also served over 1000 acceptors of the Billings Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning. Sister Miriam Therese Winter has written a new book, eucharist with a small "e," and is sharing highlights from it at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut on Tuesday, September 20th, at 7:00 p.m. As she explains in the opening chapter, "The underlying ethos of this book is to help us see the substance and stuff of our life as eucharist."
