September 21st is the International Day of Peace. It was established by the United Nations, which describes it as, "A day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities." Jubilee USA is holding a gathering outside the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., at noon on September 21st, to show support for 100% debt cancellation for impoverished nations.

Thursday, September 30th, is our Foundation Day. At our North American headquarters in Philadelphia, we will celebrate with a special Mass on Sunday, October 3. The Mass also will begin a 2-week gathering of our Sisters in leadership from around the world. At our Peace Hermitages in Philadelphia, a new outdoor chapel in memory of Anna Dengel, our founder, will be blessed and dedicated. Many other special events worldwide will mark the 79th anniversary of our founding.

In Mampally, South India, Sister-Doctor Elizabeth Vadakkekara and Sisters Philo Varghese Chullickal and Lucy Pothoor have been actively involved in caring for people with HIV/AIDS, and in awareness programs. First, classes were given on HIV/AIDS control. 40 of the attendees formed a new group, Akshara, which is now able to deal with crisis control and the AIDS program. Local people have taken on responsibility to keep this group going.

Medical Mission Sisters in mission in Kampala, Uganda, work closely with the Christian Caring Community (CCC) of their parish. In addition to a free clinic for AIDS orphans and patients, the CCC runs an informal school for orphans, and for impoverished children with one parent. Classes are held in the Church building, Monday through Friday. When orphans come for help, our Sisters make sure they are taken care of. "Usually you ask people from the same tribe if they can take the children in," Sister Mary Jo Grethel explains. "And the CCC contributes oil, flour, and things like that once a month, for everyone to use."
