Sister-Doctor Rosamma Puthusseril has received an award from the Indian Medical Association, Pala Unit, for her long-term service in the medical field. Mr. P. J. Joseph, one of the Ministers of Kerala, India, presented the award. He expressed appreciation for the generous service she has rendered to mothers and children. Sister Rosamma has been the chief obstetrician and gynecologist at Immaculate Heart of Mary Hospital in Bharananganam, Kerala, for many years. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Medical Mission Sisters at our health center in Rubanda, Uganda, have begun new programs for parenting skills, and for unmarried teenage mothers. Over 50 people have been trained as parent counselors, and the results have been very encouraging. 58 unwed teenage mothers are being supported with group activities and interaction, and can deliver their babies at our health unit free of charge. "The 2 programs complement one another," our Sisters say. "We now have many documented cases in which girls who had been made pregnant were put out of their homes, and then later reconciled and received back into their homes, following intervention from these programs." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . New Jerusalem Laura, the North Philadelphia addiction recovery program founded by Sister Margaret McKenna, had its first Alumni Day in September. Dozens of graduates attended, sharing how this program has helped them. The staff hopes to make this an annual event. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . After a year in Ireland studying towards a Master's degree in Development, Sister Senait Mengesha recently returned to Ethiopia. She is continuing work on a project for her degree in Addis Abeba, on the effects of HIV/AIDS on family economy.
