World Food Day, which marks the founding of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is October 16. The theme for 2007 is, “The Right to Food.” As the FAO says, “The right to food is the inherent human right of every woman, man, girl and boy, wherever they live on this planet.” A number of Medical Mission Sisters are actively involved in food security activities. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sunday, October 21, is the 81st World Mission Sunday. Medical Mission Sisters will be marking the occasion with a variety of celebrations worldwide. This year’s theme is, “All the Churches for All the World.” To read the complete message of Pope Benedict XVI for this day, please click here: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In our new mission in Angiya, Kenya, Sister Christine Kivungi is coordinating our activities with a group of nearly 70 widows. They have been provided with a revolving fund for their income-generating activities, and they pay for their loans in weekly installments. Some of these widows are HIV-positive, and are on antiretroviral therapy. Our Sisters’ main focus is on reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . United Nations Day is celebrated on Wednesday, October 24. Medical Mission Sisters have consultative status with the UN through ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council. This council coordinates the UN's work in economic, social, cultural, educational, health and related fields. For more information about our work with the UN, please visit: www.mms-un.org
