Sister Joan Marie Doud, a nurse-midwife who directs our curative clinic in Rubanda, Uganda, recently returned to the U.S. to attend a Symposium on "Safe Womanhood in an Unsafe World," held at the University of Pennsylvania. Attendees from 32 countries participated. To review the topics and view webcasts of some of the sessions, please click here. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In England, Sisters Rita Syron, Bernadette Poovathunkal, and Nichola Lovett cast their vote for trade justice, along with 6,000 other campaigners from more than 50 U.K. organizations. The campaigners' message to the UK government stated that, to end poverty and protect the environment, we need trade justice - not free trade. The UK is hosting the G8 meeting of world leaders in Scotland in July, and also holding the European Union presidency for 6 months next year, so it is in a unique position to influence and create change. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) has been officially launched. UNESCO is the lead agency for the promotion of the Decade. The aim is to see education for sustainable development integrated into different learning situations. The vision of the Decade is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education, and to learn the values, behavior, and lifestyles required for a sustainable future, and for positive societal transformation. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In the U.S., May is designated as Older Americans Month. Our older Sisters in North America are active in a variety of ministries: health care; education; advocacy; justice work; holistic health; social work; pastoral work; community-based health care; the creative and contemplative arts; communications; ecology; and, of course, meditation and prayer. We thank you for your generous support and prayers for them.
