Sister Marisol Martinez made her Final Vows on May 15th in Arequipa, Peru. Medical Mission Sisters around the world pray for her, and celebrate with her on this very special, joyful occasion. Sister Marisol, 37, teaches in the Nursery School at our Anna Dengel Center in Arequipa. She also helps the parents to understand the basics children need to grow up in freedom and self-confidence. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 Medical Mission Sisters who are physicians met in Frankfurt, Germany, at the end of April. The Sister-Doctors at the meeting ranged in age from 28 to 74 years, and came from involvements in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, the Netherlands, Peru, and the U.S. After the meeting, 16 of the attendees, along with 15 of our other Sisters, traveled to Mother Anna Dengel's birthplace in Austria. "The meeting was stimulating, fun, affirming, and healing," shares Sister-Doctor Helen Marr Mitchell, who is a pediatrician in Appalachia. "The journey into the Tyrol of Austria was a magic time of walking in sacred space, sharing with good and energetic companions, and taking in almost overwhelming beauty and a tremendous sense of both Medical Mission Sisters' and human history." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Carol Reed is in her second year of teaching English at the Major Seminary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. "I work with the first year students, who number 45 this year," she explains. The courses in the 7-year program are taught in English, so a basic knowledge is essential for the students. "The facility is run by the Capuchins ... and staffed by members of various communities," she says. "At present, I am the only female face in the crowd!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is a co-sponsor of "Cover the Uninsured Week" in the U.S., which began on May 10th. A coalition of diverse groups - faith communities, business, labor, and health organizations - is drawing attention to the fact that nearly 44 million Americans lacked health coverage in 2003. This was an increase of more than 2 million in just one year. Most of the uninsured (8 out of 10) are in working families; 8 ½ million are children under the age of 18. This justice issue is of great concern for the Medical Mission Sisters. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org or www.covertheuninsuredweek.org.
