Sister Belaynesh Abrera has a new apostolate at the Archdiocesan Center in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, where she has begun the Peace and Justice Desk. For her, this is a challenge and a joy. She is designing programs, developing the vision for this work of the Bishops’ Conference, and introducing the office to religious, parish priests and parish councils. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In the U.S., May is celebrated as Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is, “Older Americans: Making Choices for a Healthier Future.” As the U.S. Administration on Aging notes, “This theme encourages us to think differently about health and long term care, and work together to rebalance and modernize our current systems so that we may adequately plan for and address the needs of current and future generations. Older persons are entitled to live lives of dignity and independence.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Juanita Ortega, a nurse and community health worker who has served in Venezuela for 53 years, is beginning a new involvement in the city of Barquisimeto. She will be working with mothers and children who do not receive health benefits from the government’s health programs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Five Medical Mission Sisters were among those who participated in a Holy Week Faith and Resistance Retreat in Washington, D.C. “It was a time of sharing in the pain of those who are suffering, and a time of sharing in the pain caused by others who ‘know not what they do,’” says Sister Vera Sheenan. “It was a time of joy, too, of seeing young people’s awareness being opened by sharing the Word of God and the word of their lives with others to bring about the in-breaking of the Reign of God’s peace."
