Sisters Pauline Sadiq from Pakistan and Jean Amar from the Philippines are establishing a new international, intercultural community in Lahore, Pakistan, for the formation of Medical Mission Sisters' candidates. They will be joined by Sister Agatha Titi Prawati from Indonesia. Lahore, the capital of the province of Punjab, is known as the center of culture in Pakistan. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Medical Mission Sisters' annual Justice Co-Mission Meeting will take place at our North American headquarters in Philadelphia from May 4th - 7th. The theme is, "Making the Connections: Moving toward Change." Sisters and Associates involved in justice ministries will share their own experiences and up-to-date information on: the Health Charter and People's Health Movement; Human Trafficking; Immigration; the Millennium Development Goals and Catholic Social Teaching; Principles of Economic Justice; Water; and Genetically Modified Foods. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The children of Kaisers, a small mountain town near Mother Anna Dengel's birthplace of Steeg, Austria, generously donated the money collected from their First Communion Mass to the children with whom we are in mission in Attat, Ethiopia. Thanks to this donation, the 25 boys and girls making their First Communion in Attat all were able to wear simple white gowns over their regular, worn-out clothes. Our Sisters in Attat report that the Ethiopian children were delighted, and sent thank-you letters and photographs to their new Austrian friends. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At Holy Family Hospital in Mandar, India, Sister Anna Varkey Kuruvachira directs the RIHAA De-addiction Counseling Center, with assistance from Sister Anna Kalista Bara. Because the number of patients needing treatment and counseling for alcohol addiction has increased, 3 wards in the hospital were renovated and enclosed for detoxification and rehabilitation. Over 160 persons addicted to alcohol are treated yearly, and families are counseled and helped toward rehabilitation. The program, which includes intensive follow-up, has a good success rate. So often poverty and hopelessness are the causes of addiction in this area.
