Please join us in congratulations and prayers for Sister-Doctor Maria Fernanda Ramirez Rivera, who makes her First Vows on March 25 in Lima, Peru. A pediatrician, Sister Maria has been the only doctor caring for children in Pachacutec, a squatters’ colony with a large number of young people. She also has ministered with Sister Barbara Ann Brigham, visiting nutrition programs for the children and meeting with their mothers. We ask God to bless her in a special way at this time. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Attat Hospital in Ethiopia has become an established site for the administration of anti-retroviral drugs. As Administrator of the hospital, Sister Toni Redito was involved with the construction of a new facility for the ART therapy. Sister Nigist Biru is active in the counseling related to the therapy. She and other hospital workers have registered over 500 people, and are being supported and guided by staff at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. in developing the best line of treatment. Sister Nigist has found the key to helping is being fully present to those who come, showing love and sharing their pain and suffering.

The Natural Family Planning Center of Washington, D.C., has received a New Partners Initiative grant from the U.S. Federal Government to upgrade the TeenSTAR programs in Uganda and Ethiopia. This grant is part of the President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief. Sister-Doctor Miriam Paul (Hanna) Klaus, Executive Director of the NFP Center and founder of TeenSTAR, says, “We’re very excited about this opportunity to expand the existing programs, and pray that the work will benefit many.” For more information, please visit www.teenstar-international.org.

Each year, prior to International Women’s Day, the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women holds a two-week session to celebrate women’s successes and challenges, focusing on specific topics of global interest. This year, Sisters Teresita Hinnegan and Janet Gottschalk joined the thousands of women and young girls who gathered in New York to concentrate on Violence Against the Girl Child. “Trafficking and violence of all kinds towards women were highlighted in some extremely interesting and sobering sessions,” Sister Janet says.
