In New Delhi, India, Sister Agnes Panikulam participated in a televised diocesan panel discussion on the subject of homosexuality and the attitude of the Catholic Church. She has also been asked to speak at a seminar for a Buddhist group on life, death, and dying. Her topic will be "dying well." The Dalai Lama is expected to be there, as well as a Catholic priest talking about resurrection, and a Muslim group sharing on funeral services and life after death.

2005 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Microcredit. Our Sisters have long supported microcredit as a way of empowering those made poor, and have helped to implement small savings schemes and microcredit lending programs, especially among women. As actress Natalie Portman, spokesperson for the Year, says, "Microcredit is about giving hope. When you're talking about making loans to women whose income is less than $1 a day, you can easily make the leap to see what a microloan can make possible. …These women work so hard, and they manage to pay off their loans, and the first thing they do is educate and feed their kids. It's amazing that the world is not investing more in this resource."

Many poor Ethiopian women have opened or expanded businesses, and increased their family's income, through loan programs supported by our Sisters.
