The People's Health Movement just released the Mumbai Declaration, a consensus document created by over 700 delegates from 44 countries who gathered at Mumbai, India, in January. Our Sister Julia Valiaveetil attended the meeting. "It was a thrilling and challenging experience ... I felt really moved by the tremendous strength that we the people have," she shares. The Mumbai Declaration highlights 6 key challenges:
2. End war and occupation 3. Implement comprehensive, sustainable primary health care 4. Confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic with a primary health care and health systems approach 5. Reverse environmental damage caused by unsustainable development strategies 6. End discrimination in the right to health, and take measures to stop violence against women For the complete text of the Declaration, please visit: www.phmovement.org. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Our Sister Vera Sheenan recently participated in a rally in Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored by the East Coast network of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF - East). 800 people gathered to draw attention to the way poverty and blight affect children's health, and call for federal aid to cities to alleviate these conditions. Statistics show that 25% of the children in the central Harlem neighborhood of New York City have asthma; 20% of the children in the Oliver neighborhood of Baltimore also have asthma. The principal of the Oliver Elementary School said that the Federal "No Child Left Behind Act" does not account for the living conditions these children experience. "We know children will be left behind in Oliver, in Harlem, in North Philadelphia, and in other communities like these up and down the East Coast," she stated. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
