Sister-Doctor Miriam Paul Klaus recently returned home to Bethesda, MD, after a global trip conducting training workshops for Teen STAR (Sexuality Teaching in the context of Adult Responsibility). She visited Seoul, Korea; Hong Kong; Nairobi, Kenya; and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in western Africa. "The country is extremely poor, and the people are heroic," Sister Miriam Paul said about Burkina Faso. "I visited a primary school, where there were 168 kids in one classroom, three kids to one book, and one teacher. How anyone learns anything is a first class miracle ...we were grateful to have been able to help." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Several Medical Mission Sisters attended the installation of Bishop Abuna Musie as a new bishop in Ethiopia, establishing a new Eparchy that brings the total number of bishops in the country to 10. "It was wonderful really to see the people coming out to welcome their Abuna Musie, previously rector of the Seminary where I teach," reports Sister Carol Reed. Several priests, the Archbishop, and Bishop Musie stayed one night at the Sisters' house in Attat. "The Archbishop is a great storyteller! And we added the story of Mother Dengel coming to the area, showing them her photo with the late Cardinal, then a parish priest," says Sister Carol. "Please pray for the new Eparchy and its needs. The possibilities are exciting!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Philo Morris has been reappointed to a three-year term as Medical Mission Sisters' representative at the United Nations in New York until March, 2007. Sister Philo's focus at the UN is on Financing for Development and Sustainable Development. She also works with Church World Service, and is co-chair of the Earth Value Caucus. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Our Sister Gertrud Dederichs represented the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility at the 2004 Agribusiness Accountability Initiative (AAI) Forum, held in January at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium. Co-sponsored by the Center of Concern and the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, the AAI is a growing international network of academics, activists, and food system experts who are concerned about the sustainability of the global food system. The issue discussed by all at the Forum was the extraordinary power of a handful of transnational firms that control every stage of food production.
