This month marks the 25th anniversary of the first documented cases of AIDS. Nearly 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. 14,000 new HIV infections and 8,000 AIDS deaths occur each day. Medical Mission Sisters have been working with victims of this pandemic for over 20 years. We serve in AIDS education and prevention programs; train care-givers and counselors; distribute medicine; offer hospice and clinic care; minister as AIDS buddies; offer comfort to the dying; and teach volunteers to care for AIDS orphans. Our healing presence to those with or affected by HIV/AIDS extends to almost every nation in which we serve.

Medical Mission Sisters mourn the victims of the recent earthquake in central Java, Indonesia. Please join us in prayer for them and for the survivors. Our Sisters in Indonesia have sent food and medicine via the Bishops' Conference to help with relief work.

Like so many, we are following the discussion about immigration reform in the U.S. with great interest. Two websites we have found helpful are from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Latin America Working Group .

In Florida, Sister Lorraine Ryan recently received the 2006 Community Award from the Boynton Beach Faith-Based Community Development Corporation. This group brings about positive change in the "Heart of Boynton" mainly by helping low-to-moderate ethnic minority families attain their own homes in the area. Sister Lorraine was honored for her dedication to the women of Boynton Beach, and to the health of the community.
