We congratulate Sisters Jocelyne Mukabwa, originally from Kenya, and Nigist Biru, from Ethiopia, on the recent Profession of their First Vows. Sister Jocelyne's first mission assignment will be in Rubanda, Uganda, while Sister Nigist will serve in Ethiopia. They are among our 21 African Medical Mission Sisters.

Monday, June 20th, is the 5th annual World Refugee Day. "Courage in the face of flight and exile" is this year's theme. As the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) states, "It takes courage to be a refugee. Courage not to give up hope, and to make the most of the hand that has been dealt. Courage to start a new life against daunting odds, eventually to become contributing and enriching members of society once more." Throughout our 80-year history, Medical Mission Sisters have worked with many refugees. For the complete statement of the UNHCR and more information about this day, please click here.

16 of our Sisters and Associates are attending a Justice Co-Mission gathering in San Diego, California, from June 23rd to June 26th. The attendees, from California, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., will discuss their involvements with human trafficking, border issues, the treatment of women, non-violence, and peace.

On July 6th, the G-8 countries (Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK, and the US) will meet in Scotland. Debt relief for the world's poorest nations is again on the agenda. Medical Mission Sisters support 100% debt cancellation for these nations. If you would like to show your support, please call the White House on June 29th at (202) 456-1111, and ask President Bush to work with the other G-8 leaders to cancel the debt at this meeting.
