Sunday, June 5th, is the United Nations World Environment Day. The theme this year is: Green Cities, and the slogan is: Plan for the Planet! The main international celebrations of World Environment Day 2005 will be held in San Francisco, California. The agenda is "to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . National Hunger Awareness Day in the United States is Tuesday, June 7th. This is the 4th year of the annual observance, created by a grassroots movement to raise awareness about the hidden yet solvable problem of hunger in America. Local events will take place around the country. On Monday, June 6th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Washington, D.C., National Cathedral, an Interfaith Convocation will be held. Faith leaders from around the nation--including Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington, Sister Christine Vladimiroff, President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, and dozens more--will join over a thousand participants to draw attention to the problem of hunger at home and abroad. In the spirit of reverence, all in attendance will stand in solidarity with the millions of people who feed the hungry and bring relief to people in need. Medical Mission Sisters are part of those millions; we encourage the efforts of this grassroots movement. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Pat Patton is very involved with the House of Hope HIV/AIDS Voluntary Counseling and Training Center, which opened in late 2004 in Loitokitok, Kenya. The Center is now able to refer HIV-positive patients to a privately run clinic in nearby Birikani, which is the only facility in the entire South Kajiado district that supplies anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs). A member of the team that sponsored House of Hope and active in its ongoing monitoring, Sister Pat is currently on a short furlough in New York. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Our Alliance for Justice Office has signed a copy of a letter to be presented to Mr. Paul Wolfowitz on June 1st, his first day at the World Bank. There will also be a protest in front of the Bank.
