In Limbe, Malawi, Sister Nirmala Lopes trains pastoral volunteers in hospitals and prisons. Sister Nirmala is a pastoral chaplaincy team member of the Blantyre Archdiocese. "A large portion of our patients are living with the effects of HIV/AIDS," she says. "The effects are not only found in the physical illness, but in the trauma of coping with the prospects of leaving children orphaned, living with a devastating illness, and the economic implications to families." The training of more personnel means that "more persons will be visited and cared for, consoled, and listened to in their greatest times of need and vulnerability." She adds, "We can only do what we can and the rest, God will take care of. Even one person can make a difference in our journey to God!" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Five of our Sisters are in mission in Roshni, an interior rural village, inhabited by tribal people, in Madhya Pradesh, India. Malnourished children and TB patients are treated at our clinic, which is open 3 days a week. The people of Roshni and the nearby area are becoming more health conscious, and there is a notable reduction in the number of malaria cases. Programs in the clinic focus on individual health education. Medicinal plants are grown, and herbal preparations are made for treating various diseases. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Birgit Weiler, who was in mission for many years in Peru, has a pastoral involvement at the prison for women in Frankfurt, Germany. She accompanies women from Latin America who have been arrested. These women find it especially difficult to be in jail in a country where they don't know the language and the culture, and where they will be separated from their families for a long period of time.
