In January, several of our Sisters in Germany participated in a workshop in the Catholic Academy of Berlin on Faith and Healing. "We tried to find aspects which are general and helpful for healing in this part of the world, and also in an intercultural context," they explained. Sister-Doctor Maria Goetzens, our District Coordinator in Germany, spoke on the relationship between health and poverty, and ways that changes in the social system could bring about greater health and healing.

We welcome 4 women in Selud, India, who have entered the pre-candidacy phase of membership in the Medical Mission Sisters: Anupa Toppo, Benilda Mary, Indira Xavier, and Monica Dinkar. "It was a joyful and unforgettable day for all of us," they share. A Solemn Mass was followed by dinner and a cultural program. "As we move forward, we ask all of you to keep us in your prayers, so that our inner desire, to do the will of God, may be fulfilled."

Sister Joan Marie Doud shares the progress she has seen in the lives of the young in Rubanda, Uganda. More children are completing primary school, and both girls and boys are being sent on to secondary school. "Very seldom do we see children die from diarrhea; and, in our area, we haven't seen a case of measles for about 4 years now," she explains. "Even the number of children who come (to the Clinic) convulsing is very small, in spite of the increase in malaria. So the training of Health Workers and Traditional Birth Attendants has been invaluable."

Ethiopian Sister Nohas Nigist Biru, who made her First Vows in Nairobi last spring, is serving as a pediatrics nurse at Attat Hospital in Guraghe, Ethiopia. Sister Nigist is the first Medical Mission Sister from Guraghe. She is part of a hospital team beginning a new involvement with AIDS patients. She also has become active with a group of young women who do hand embroidery, encouraging them to be independent through their work.
