The United Nations has launched 2004 as the International Year of Rice. A "symbol of cultural identity and global unity," rice is the staple food for more than half of the women, children, and men in our world. Although the world's population is growing, land and water resources for rice production are diminishing. The UN views rice as so important that, for the first time in its history, the UN has dedicated a year to a single crop of food.
