On December 3rd, our Sister Mary Louise Lynch and Maryknoll Sister Helen Sheels were both honored at a 23rd annual remembrance service for the Four Women Martyrs of El Salvador, held at Corpus Christi parish in Baltimore. The two Sisters, who have been active for many years in justice and peace work in the Baltimore diocese, received many loving tributes from a full church of peacemakers. In November, Sister Lutgarde De Brouwer celebrated two years of life in the Rhimouhouse in Amsterdam. This apartment houses women refugees and their children who have no place to stay, for at least 6 months. Sister Lutgarde has shared her life with over 20 different women and children from different nations.

"Each person comes with her own story, her own fear and pain, her own hopes and dreams," explains Sister Lutgarde. "For each of them, this place is a refuge, a place where they can find some rest, some safety, some hospitality, some time to find out what to do next. For each of them, this house is a stepping stone on their own personal way."

Working with a group of five volunteers, Sister Lutgarde helps the residents to learn Dutch; find employment; maintain the household; and prepare nightly meals. An outing or celebration is held each month, to keep up the residents' spirits. Medical and/or psychological care is arranged for the residents as needed.

"I am grateful for those women and children who have found a home in this house," adds Sister Lutgarde. "For all those moments of sharing, of joy and sorrow, of giving and receiving ... for all those moments of grace."

Kurji Holy Family Hospital in Patna, India, has received the 2003 Fr. Tong, S.J. Memorial Award, in appreciation for the Organization and Community Health Work of our centers. The citation read, in part:

"Kurji Holy Family Hospital has worked in critical health and development concerns of Bihar for four decades, covering four Blocks, namely, Patna, Danapur, Maner, and Bihta. They have also provided enormous services during natural calamities in the past.

Kurji Holy Family Hospital is also actively involved in RCH, TB Control and HIV/AIDS work, in collaboration with the Government of India. Fr. Tong was actively associated with this institution for many years.

Keeping in view the depressing health situation of Bihar, the contribution of Kurji Holy Family Hospital is like a bright lamp illuminating the darkness around."

Sister Vera Sheenan was one of more than 10,000 participants who attended the annual nonviolent, civil resistance action to close the School of the Americas Watch/Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation in Ft. Benning, Georgia on November 22nd and 23rd. "Saturday evening, the Eucharist was celebrated under a giant tent," she recalls. "The reverence and prayerfulness of this vast crowd of all ages was wonderfully inspiring."
