Monday, December 1, is the 20th commemoration of World AIDS Day. UNAIDS estimates that, in 2007, 33.2 million people were living with HIV, 2.5 million people became newly infected, and 2.1 million people died of AIDS. This year’s theme is, “Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise - Leadership,” which emphasizes the need for all sectors of society, not just governments, to take the initiative in fighting AIDS. In many nations, Medical Mission Sisters are involved in hands-on care of those who are suffering with HIV/AIDS; in training caregivers and counselors; in teaching HIV/AIDS prevention; in working with parishes and dioceses to establish programs to care for AIDS orphans; and in being AIDS buddies. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Medical Mission Sisters in the U.S. received a letter and certificate from the President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition thanking us for our support over the past few years. The certificate states that we were instrumental in the enactment of the National Housing Trust Fund legislation, passed by Congress and signed by President Bush this summer. For more information about the Coalition, please click here. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In Agno, Pangasinan, the Philippines, Sister Maria Gracia Navata is in mission with fisher men and women in integrated human development programs and community building. She works side-by-side with the people as they focus on personal and communal empowerment, debt relief, and reef and mangrove planting…all to help improve their lives. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Medical Mission Sisters 2009 calendars are available upon request. Please e-mail us if you would like to receive one. Also, please send us any special requests for prayers you may have via our Contact Us page. December 1, 2008
