Wednesday, December 1, is World AIDS Day. This year, the focus of the campaign is on Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS. Its theme, "Have You Heard Me Today?" This question explores how gender inequality fuels the AIDS epidemic. "Globally, young women and girls are more susceptible to HIV than men and boys, with studies showing they can be 2.5 times more likely to be HIV-infected as their male counterparts," explains UNAIDS. In many nations, Medical Mission Sisters are involved in hands-on care of those who are suffering with HIV/AIDS; in training caregivers and counselors; in teaching HIV/AIDS prevention; in working with parishes and dioceses to establish programs to care for AIDS orphans; and in being AIDS buddies. "I am grateful for all the blessings, people whose lives I have touched, and events that have made up the 50 years," says Sister Pat. She has been in mission in Latin America for over 40 years, and in Peru since 1973. She began a health clinic in Arequipa, and also helped to found our Anna Dengel Center there. In her current ministry, she offers alternative healing modalities and holistic services to those who cannot afford them. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
