Saturday, December 1, is World AIDS Day. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 39.5 million people living with HIV, including 2.3 million children. This year’s theme is, “Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise - Leadership,” which emphasizes the need for all sectors of society, not just governments, to take the initiative in fighting AIDS. In many nations, Medical Mission Sisters are involved in hands-on care of those who are suffering with HIV/AIDS; in training caregivers and counselors; in teaching HIV/AIDS prevention; in working with parishes and dioceses to establish programs to care for AIDS orphans; and in being AIDS buddies. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Women’s Circle, founded by Sister Lorraine in Boynton Beach, assists women of limited means with educational programs, support groups, and preparation for employment. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Holy Family Hospital in Mandar marked 60 years of service to the sick in 2007. The Diamond Jubilee celebration was a festive one. Many of our Sisters, other religious, priests, co-workers, and friends attended. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sister Edna Villafuerte recently moved from Philadelphia to our global headquarters in London, where she will support our worldwide leadership team with a ministry in hospitality and secretarial work.
