Sister Goretti Poovathunkal, who is from India, is in mission with Sister Margaret McKenna at our New Jerusalem Laura recovery program in Philadelphia. She describes their summer lunch program for 60 children living in their inner-city neighborhood: "The children get sandwiches, cookies, fruit, and drinks every day at noon. They have a chance to play and sit in our beautiful garden." She adds that, in June, "We had a group of students from North Carolina 5 days in a row, 20 at a time. Their lifestyle was simple, sleeping on the floor of a church, wearing one pair of clothes, and doing hard work. They shared their lives with our group, and all enjoyed their experiences together."

On June 26th, the staff of Holy Family Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, began events marking the hospital's 50th Jubilee. Bishop Evarist celebrated Mass for the hospital's many friends and benefactors, and a high tea was held for the employees. The first 3 babies born on the day of jubilee received a special gift. Medical Mission Sisters built and have been in mission at this 225-bed, now diocesan-owned hospital for 50 years. Sisters Celine Bernier, Helen Marie McGrath, and Elona Stanchak are among those in Karachi enjoying this notable anniversary year. Fifty years ago our friends and benefactors helped to make the hospital's opening, and service to those in need, a reality.

Our Women's Circle in Boynton Beach, Florida, recently held its yearly Recognition Ceremony. "75 culturally-diverse adult students received certificates in literacy, computers, crochet, quilting, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). 31 volunteers were also honored," says Sister Lorraine Ryan, program co-director. On July 10, Women's Circle participated in the 4th Annual Child and Youth Health Fair in Boynton Beach. Over 60 low-to-moderate-income families attended this event. The young people received free immunizations, and physicals in preparation for school.
