Friday, April 22nd, is the 35th celebration of Earth Day. In every nation in which we are in mission, Medical Mission Sisters are very conscious of the ecological dimension of health and healing, and of the impact of our choices and decisions on the well-being of the community of life. Our Alliance for Justice Office has signed a letter from religious leaders to the U.S. government, urging it to "do everything within its power at the upcoming meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to ensure 100% debt cancellation of the debts of the world's impoverished nations to the International Financial Institutions, without harmful conditions attached." The letter was released to the press on April 15th, and hand-delivered to President Bush and Treasury Secretary John Snow. Several of our Sisters in South India are now living among the tsunami victims in Kottilpadu, a Catholic village of about 600 families in Tamil Nadu, Kerala. April 14th was the official opening of the house shared by our Sisters and the Daughters of Mary. "The greatest need is to get the people back to work, which is fishing," says Sister Elizabeth Vadakekara, our Sector Coordinator in Asia. With help from our generous U.S. donors and the parish priest of the village, our Sisters hope to obtain 200 boats, each of which will be shared by 2 or 3 families. The government will supply nets. "In this way, the whole village can move into earning their livelihood," Sister Elizabeth explains. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . On April 18th and 19th, three members of our Mission Development Center Fund Raising Advisory Board in North America will be meeting in Philadelphia with three Board members of Vrienden, our "Circle of Friends" in the Netherlands. This meeting of Medical Mission Sisters' fund raising groups is a follow-up to an April, 2003, joint meeting in London. We hope it will be a beneficial sharing of ideas and programs.
