In Maracaibo, Venezuela, Sister Marielena Ridad celebrates 35 years of mission this year in Barrio Simon Bolivar, a slum area. She is currently active in the formation of several groups in the barrio, including socio-political formation of Community Councils. The participants from the barrio are gaining a great deal of practical knowledge from these programs, as well as the tools to understand and analyze different points of view.

Saturday, April 7, is World Health Day. It marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). On this day, around the world, thousands of events celebrate the importance of health, the dignity and value of working for it, and the need for health care professionals worldwide. This year’s theme is international health security. Sister Edna Villafuerte is working in collaboration with Catholic Charities of New Orleans among the victims of Hurricane Katrina. “Some parts of New Orleans after Katrina are still a stunning reminder of the scope of its devastation: street after street, block after block,” she says. “It is good to be here--to help somehow in restoring hope, and in the healing of spirits.”
