| Sister Ursula Preusser Sister Ursula Preusser is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer. German Sister Ursula Preusser joined the Medical Mission Sisters in 1986 at age 25. She lived with our Sisters in Duisburg, Germany, while serving as a nurse in Hamborn, an area of the city with a high rate of alcoholism and unemployment. In 1991, Sister Ursula began mission in Africa. After several months in Uganda, where she had her first practical experiences in basic community health care, she began working at Holy Family Hospital in Berekum, Ghana. She went on to be a clinical instructor in the Nurses Training College in Berekum for several years, then traveled to England for additional studies at the Royal College of Nursing. She began teaching again in Ghana in 2001. At this time, Sister Ursula also fulfilled a long-held dream of creating a large organic vegetable garden. Sister Fernande Pelletier suggested she get help from a young man named Alhassan, an orphan who had been on his own since the age of 13, supporting himself by vegetable farming and duck rearing. Sister Ursula says that her time spent with Alhassan "helped me to understand how very necessary it is for young people to have an adult around who has time and takes an interest in them. I would say, just being there and being interested has a tremendous transforming power. In a time of economic hardship, when more families disintegrate, this form of healing presence becomes more and more important." Desiring to be in mission with young people, Sister Ursula moved to Sunyani, Ghana, to work at the Don Bosco Boys Home in 2003. The boys at the home range in age from 13 to 20. She runs a small clinic for them; gives workshops on communication skills; and manages one of their income-generating projects, the sheep and goats. In addition to her work with the young people and part-time teaching, Sister Ursula also serves as District Coordinator and Vocation Director for our District West Africa.
