Sister Therese Tindirugamu
Sister Therese is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to those in need in the spirit of Jesus the healer.

Sister Therese was born in Southwest Uganda in 1950. She first encountered Medical Mission Sisters when she began a three-year training program in nursing at Virika Hospital, Fort Portal. "The Sisters seemed very human, and very committed in their work," she remembers. "They were very close to people, and related well to them."

After completing her program, Sister Therese worked at the hospital for three years, and then went on to more advanced nursing studies. She entered Medical Mission Sisters in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1980. Following her first vows, she studied midwifery, and graduated in 1984.

"My first assignment was to Ghana, West Africa, where I spent three years working as a nurse at Holy Family Hospital, Techiman," she recalls. "This was a very significant experience in my life as a Medical Mission Sister. I attribute much of my personal and spiritual growth, and my zeal for missionary life, to those three years of my life in Ghana."

Sister Therese went on to advanced studies in religion, spiritual counseling, and pastoral work. The focus of her ministry became vocation formation. She worked for three years as coordinator in East Africa for the pre-candidacy program, and for the Sisters in temporary vows. She then worked for nine years as coordinator for the Sector Africa Candidacy Program, based in Nairobi. She currently serves as the District Coordinator for East Africa.

"I am most grateful to District East Africa membership, and to the sector leadership, for their encouragement and support during these past challenging and yet grace-filled years," she says. "It is my belief and hope that this mutual support will continue as we move together in mission in the district."
