Sister Philo Morris
Sister Philo Morris is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

"Interculturality has been part of my life throughout the whole of it," says Sister Philo Morris. She was born and raised in Bangalore, India, where her neighbors were from different religious backgrounds and spoke different languages. "In school I took 3 languages, English, Hindi and Kanada, none of which was my mother tongue." With this background, she joined Medical Mission Sisters at age 18.

Sister Philo has a Master's Degree in Law, and practiced law in Pune district court. She also has 2 Bachelor's Degrees, in Law and in Commerce, and served as District Treasurer in North India. She has experience as a medical technologist and hospital secretary.

For the past 5 years, Sister Philo has been representing Medical Mission Sisters at the United Nations in New York. "I believe we are the voice of the voiceless in an arena where policies are made which affect every living being on our planet earth," she says.

Sister Philo is Chair of the NGO (non-government organization) Committee on Financing for Development, which she helped to start. In this role, she is called upon to speak about financing and development issues at a variety of meetings. She also is Co-Chair of the Earth Values Caucus, which seeks to infuse ecological values into the UN agenda, documents, and processes.

Sister Philo now sees herself as a global citizen. "Suddenly one's family is a group of nations; one rises above boundaries and divisions between nations. Everyone's problem becomes your problem, and this is even more so in our globalized world."

"The work at the UN continues to be challenging for me, and I am very grateful to the Medical Mission Sisters for entrusting this important aspect of our mission to me," she shares. "I make every effort to voice all that we are doing in different parts of the world, both at the UN meetings and among NGOs."
