Sister Marguerite Papineau Sister Marguerite Papineau is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to those in need in the spirit of Jesus the healer. Born and raised in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Sister Marguerite is from a French-American family and had a bilingual education. She was a member of the Daughters of Charity from 1959 to 1987. During that time, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Chemistry from St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and a Master's Degree in French from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She then taught high school science, math, and languages in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Tehran and Ispahan, Iran. Sister Marguerite also spent several years in Beirut, Lebanon, setting up a hostel for young women, a sponsorship program for more than 1,000 orphans, and a library for children from kindergarten through grade 12. After completing nurses' training in 1985 at Catonsville Community College in Baltimore, Sister Marguerite worked as a nurse for 2 years in Washington, D.C., then transferred to Medical Mission Sisters. Following an orientation period, she was assigned to Mirpurkhas, Pakistan, where she taught English to student nurses, and assisted with clinical care.
In 1991, Sister Marguerite began 5 years as Coordinator of our Samaritan Lay Missioners Program in Philadelphia. She also was very involved in the Medical Mission Sisters' Associate program, and in an after-school learning program for children in grades 2-7 in a very poor area of Philadelphia. She joined the Board of Trustees for "Beyond Borders" in 1996. "Her cross-cultural sensitivities, fluency in French, background in education, and deep faith commitment are but a few of the wonderful gifts she brings," they said. Sister Marguerite became certified as a Chaplain through the Clinical Pastoral Education Program under the Franciscan Health System in 1998. Explaining that she wants to facilitate healing in body, mind, and spirit, she says, "I help to heal, guide, sustain, and reconcile, so that wholeness may be obtained." She works at our Center for Human Integration in Philadelphia as a holistic health practitioner. Sister Marguerite also currently serves as our Membership Promotion Coordinator.
