Sister Moncy Varikattu Sister Moncy Varikattu is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer. Born into a large Catholic family, Sister Moncy grew up in Karalam, a village in Kerala, South India. One of our Sisters assisted at her birth. She met other Medical Mission Sisters at age 18, while visiting her mother at Chethipuzha Hospital. "Their cheerfulness and efficient service attracted me," she recalls. She joined our Community in 1977. "The moment I entered our house at Ithithanam, I had a strong feeling that this was my place," says Sister Moncy. "I have never had to question the choice that I made … the person of Jesus as manifested in Luke 4: 18-19 challenged me as I started living with the people more closely." Sister Moncy's first assignment was in Erattupetta with a Muslim community, working for the development of women and children. "We did indeed cross boundaries, and I grew in respect and appreciation as we worked hand in hand." Sister Moncy spent 5 years in nursing training at Kurji Holy Family Hospital in Patna, and 2 years in Mundakayam Medical Trust Hospital. "I loved caring for the sick and suffering," she recalls. Her next mission was with the people of Selud and the neighboring villages in Chattisgarh. "Those 5½ years were the most joyful period of my life," she says. "It was an experience of mutual growth, and we touched each other at the very core of our beings."
After several years of study in theology and religious formation, Sister Moncy was elected as a district team member, and also appointed as the formation coordinator. In 2003, Sister Moncy was elected coordinator of District South India. "What I cherish in our Society the most is the freedom and support that is given to each one of us to bloom, flourish, and be fruitful in life, and our courage to be different … we have indeed made a difference in the world." She adds, "Leadership for me means to facilitate the process of growth in relationships that are energizing, dynamic, and nurtured by all, and whereby we are enabled to bring out the best in each other."
