Sister Suzanne Maschek
Sister Suzanne is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to those in need in the spirit of Jesus the healer.

Sister Suzanne, the second of three daughters, was born in 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri. When she felt the call to be a religious, she looked for a community whose charism was both medical and missionary. She entered Medical Mission Sisters in 1963, and served in Ghana, West Africa, for 25 years.

"It was in Ghana that I found out what hospitality truly is, among the warm-hearted, self-confident Ghanaian people," she remembers. She worked as a physical therapist in Berekum for 8 years, then was elected to a 6-year term as District Coordinator for West Africa. Following this, she spent 10 years working in hospital administration in Techiman.

Moving back to the United States in 1997, Sister Suzanne became involved in helping Sisters on "Renewal" have the best possible "time off" experiences before returning to active mission. She also organized programs to foster communal renewal across North America. Sister Suzanne volunteered weekly at Calcutta House, a home for people with HIV/AIDS based in Philadelphia. In the past 6 years, she also served as Secretary for the General Assembly of worldwide Medical Mission Sisters. "It has been a high point for me to meet Sisters in their own environment, and to see the seeds of new life across the Society," she explains.

Sister Suzanne was recently elected to a 6-year term as Assistant Society Coordinator, and moved to London to assume her new duties. "As we move forward in our healing mission to face the challenges of our times, let us stand in faith-filled readiness to be open to the Spirit, who will not fail us in this endeavor," she says. "I count on your prayers and blessing."
