| Sister Mary Em McGlone Sister Mary Em is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Sellersville, PA, Sister Mary Em McGlone earned her R.N. at Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital in Darby, PA. She joined Medical Mission Sisters at age 21, and became certified as a nurse-midwife at our Catholic Maternity Institute in Santa Fe. She was missioned to Fort Portal, Uganda, where she served as a nurse and supervisor for 6 years. When Sister Mary Em returned to the U.S., she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Catholic University of America while working part-time. "There was such a reliance on technology in the U.S., while in Uganda we had to rely on all of our senses to know what was happening with the patients," she recalls. From 1972 to 1976, Sister Mary Em worked in a variety of administrative positions for our Community. "This gave me the time and distance to reexamine my commitment to health care, and the opportunity to envision a new way of being a health-care practitioner without being involved in institutional nursing," she explains. "Personal experiences, plus reading and attending some seminars, helped me to become aware and convinced of the role of energy as a life force that influences every aspect of our lives," Sister Mary Em recalls. At a national conference on holistic health in 1978, she learned about Touch for Health from its founder, Dr. John Thie. She went on to become a practitioner and educator in holistic health. Sister Mary Em began the Center for Human Integration (CHI) in 1981 in Philadelphia, and continues to serve as its Director. "A phenomenal growth in the non-invasive, body/mind/spirit integrated approach to health awareness has occurred," she says as CHI marks its 25th anniversary. 700 persons attend CHI classes and workshops each year, and approximately 2,500 client service sessions are provided annually. "My ministry is exploring with others - individually and in groups - in the context of holistic health practice and classes, the fullness of who we are as human beings - body, mind and spirit."
