Sister Magdalena Keil Sister Magdalena is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.
Born and raised in Stralsund, Sister Magdalena grew up behind the “Iron Curtain” in what was Eastern Germany. She remembers, “The borders around our country were also borders inside the socialistic system. Politicians and teachers knew what each one ‘had to believe’…and we could only believe differently in our families and in our hearts. So, I did. I got a sense for truth…and discovered a hidden love for people at the margins.” Sister Magdalena was in another religious order for 16 years. “I learned to live as a religious in a place of liberty, freedom, and somehow separated from the socialistic system,” she recalls. After the wall came down and Germany was reunified, “my dream was to come out from this isolated place and to go and live with and among the people, to share and to respond to the needs at that time.” Eventually her dream led her to the Medical Mission Sisters. “I experienced women who lived as religious in the world, who were searching for ways to respond to the needs of people, to nature and global issues, and did this in a way of love and truthfulness,” she says. Drawn to our Community, she made her First Vows in 2004, and her Final Vows in March, 2007. Sister Magdalena is currently in mission in Berlin, in an outpatient program for drug addicts. She says, “To encourage people who try to get out from a web of addiction, crime, and the scene of drugs, and the connected lifestyle, is for me the right mission. I am together with people who searched at the wrong place for life and happiness, and who struggled.” The people in the outpatient programs are from different countries, such as Turkey, Iran, Palestine, and the former Soviet Union. “Living from the source of all life – God – enables me to live with this marginal group, and to support them with my whole heart.”
