Sister Joan Thazhathel
Sister Joan is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

“Multicultural living has given me a broader view of human behaviors and respect for other cultures,” explains Sister Joan Thazhathel, our Formation Coordinator in Asia. “I was born and brought up in a village where Hindus, Muslims and Christians of other denominations lived together in unity and peace.”

Sister Joan, who also served as our Sector Coordinator in Asia, recalls that her first exposure to international living came on the day she entered our Community. “Although the early exposure and experience of internationality felt difficult at the time, it came as a blessing later in life. I am extremely grateful for the many opportunities I have had for living in international and intercultural settings.”

Sister Joan studied in the U.S. in the late 1960s, a time of great transition in religious life and in American culture. “It was a challenge for me not to be swept away by all the changes and, at the same time, to be open to interact and integrate what was good and relevant.” She was also facing the stress of student life and hospital work, which meant keeping up with rapidly changing technology. Her fellow students and staff in the anesthesia department helped to allay her fears.

“Because of the support, encouragement and appreciation I received in my work situation and studies, as well as in the Community, I was able to cope with the challenges, and I gained greater self-confidence and ease in expressing myself.”

She adds, “Looking back now, I can see it was the early exposure and lived experiences of internationality that gave me courage and confidence in accepting Sector leadership…it was a great joy for me to get acquainted with different cultural practices and rituals, and develop relationships with Sisters from other sectors.” Sister Joan now draws on these many experiences in her formation work with candidates from different parts of India.
