| Sister Audrey Hathaway Sister Audrey is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.
Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Sister Audrey became a registered nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital of Montreal, and earned her B.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Western Ontario. She completed her Master’s and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University in Montreal, where she also worked as an instructor. She did Post-Doctoral Studies at the Centre d’Immunobiologie in Paris. Sister Audrey joined Medical Mission Sisters at age 48. She was missioned to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she taught science for several years at the Ministry of Health’s Centralized School of Nursing. “Ethiopia is a very special place,” she says. “Many of the people are materially poor. However, as a people, they are industrious and hospitable; they are proud of their history and traditions; they love speeches and poetry, and they enjoy celebrations of all kinds. They also have a great respect for learning, and will make incredible sacrifices so that their children may go to school.” Sister Audrey became Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Addis Ababa University, and later served as an Associate Professor and Acting Head of the Department. She was elected our District Coordinator for Ethiopia, and also worked on the AIDS Education Unit of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors in Addis Ababa. “I enjoyed teaching in Ethiopia immensely. Most students worked hard, and many went on to become very good doctors, nurses and scientists. Some of them became outstanding in their fields of study locally and internationally. I was proud of them.” In 2001, Sister Audrey began teaching at the brand-new St. Luke Catholic Hospital and College of Nursing in Wolisso, Ethiopia. She was also the Office Administrator for our community-based development program in Dire, near Debre Zeit, and coordinated its turnover to the local people at the end of 2005. “The years flew by, always busy, never boring, and I consider all of them a great gift. I feel so fortunate to have met so many people, to have been a part of their life and to have been a participant in the development that has taken place in this most beautiful country,” she shares. Sister Audrey is currently serving at our North American Headquarters as Assistant to our Chief Financial Officer.
