Sister Janet Gottschalk
Sister Janet Gottschalk is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

Born and raised in a large Catholic family in Chicago, Sister Janet joined Medical Mission Sisters shortly after her graduation from Providence High School. She earned her nursing diploma from Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, and spent 6 years as a Nursing Supervisor at Hospital Coromoto in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

"What I realized was the way to change the health status of people wasn't through modern, medical care in a high-tech hospital, but through community-based medicine and through efforts in public health," Sister Janet explains. She returned to the U.S. and earned her B.S. in Nursing from Case-Western Reserve University; her M.S. in Regional and Community Affairs from the University of Missouri; and her Ph.D. in Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Public Health.

Sister Janet has had 11 academic appointments, including teaching positions at: Columbia University; the University of Virginia; Indiana University; the University of Texas; Case Western Reserve University; and Texas A & M. She has also served in a variety of leadership positions for our Sisters, including a 3-year term as our North American Sector Superior.

An international public health specialist, Sister Janet travels the world as a consultant; serves as a representative of the Medical Mission Sisters at the UN; and is active in a wide variety of health and justice organizations. "I have seen incredible violence, sub-human degradation and misery," she shares. "Yet, I have also been humbled by the love, example, and commitment of courageous people throughout the world."

"My ministry is peace-building," she says. "Trying to use every talent, energy, and opportunity God gives me to build a peace based on justice."

Sister Janet currently serves as Director of our Alliance for Justice Office in Washington, D.C., and as a Visiting Professor at Texas A&M International University. In 2004, she received the Ruth B. Freeman Distinguished Career Award from the Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association.
