Sister Goretti Poovathunkal
Sister Goretti Poovathunkal is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

"I was an ordinary, simple village girl who joined Medical Mission Sisters in 1953," says Sister Goretti. "I later became a serious novice, and I was asked to work in the kitchen in our Novitiate in Pune, India. From then until August, 2003, I worked in the kitchens in Pune, Patna City, Patna, Mandar, Kurji, Kodarma, and Thuruthipuram." She managed many people and many activities in those years.

During a time of renewal in 2001, Sister Goretti visited the USA, and saw Sister Margaret McKenna's New Jerusalem Laura ministry in North Philadelphia. She was strongly inspired to return to this mission, to share her life with these people struggling to recover from addiction. In India, she had done some work with persons dependent on alcohol at the hospital. After waiting, preparing, and praying for a year, she came to live at New Jerusalem Laura in 2003. "Grace allows me to see the worth of every person, and enables me to value their work," she shares.

Living with people recovering from addiction, Sister Goretti says, "I see miracles every day … the demons of addiction turn into the joy of recovering wholeness and holiness." She immediately felt comfortable and safe with the African American residents of New Jerusalem Laura. She noticed that those in need can receive inexpensive or free food and clothing, but was shocked that, "Often, there is no proper medical treatment available to people in this big city." She has become involved in marches for peace, and for affordable housing.

"As I live in this mission, I become more and more aware of the beauty in our lives, the gifts we have been given, and how these gifts enable me and others to grow, the blessings that we receive from the Creator and the universe," she says. "I feel that God has placed me here for a purpose."
