Sister Gisela Reich
Sister Gisela is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

Sister Gisela Reich was born in Germany in 1964. The youngest of 3 children, she grew up in a small village. Her father died when she was very young. "We had the good fortune to join a parish whose people graciously took us in," she recalls. "Soon the parish was my home, and it remained my home during all my childhood and youth."

After completing secondary school, Sister Gisela joined Medical Mission Sisters and became a social worker. She lived in our newly-formed community in Duisburg, Germany, where she worked at a youth center. Her first overseas mission assignment was to Peru, where she has been in mission since 1991. She has been our District Coordinator in Peru for the past 5 years.

"Living and working with Peruvians, with poor Peruvians, has gifted me with a lot of hope in our God of life," she explains. "It has strengthened my faith, has helped me recognize that God is our creator…only as community are we able to continue to build God's reign here and now."

Sister Gisela is currently active with ADEP (Audio Visuals of Peru), preparing didactic materials for youth work, and participating in a team that gives workshops and retreats for youth groups. The long-term goal of her efforts is to provide solid lay leadership for the Church of Peru. Sister Gisela is also active with a group of young people in her parish, Cristo Liberador (Christ the Liberator).

"Life has been full of grace, growth, and gratitude," she says. "15 years of active parish life have given me the basis to understand liturgy and service, living and struggling in community for a higher purpose, finding that in all the problems and gifts of my life, God is my center and ever will be so," she says.
