Sister Mary Gavin
Sister Mary Gavin is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Sister Mary Gavin was studying nursing at Misericordia College when she learned about Medical Mission Sisters. She entered the Community at age 21, and earned her R.N. at DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis. In 1962, she was missioned to Holy Family Hospital in Dacca, Bangladesh. She became certified as a nurse-midwife, and worked as a nurse and supervisor in obstetrics, the newborn nursery, and pediatrics. She later coordinated nursing services, and was a Director and Instructor for Inservice Education.

Returning to the U.S. in 1971, Sister Mary continued her work as a supervisor in nurse-midwifery at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She always had a strong interest in art, and studied art therapy at Temple University. An adult education class in Chinese Brush Painting led her to an intensive study of Eastern meditative arts.

Sister Mary began a Contemplative Arts Ministry 20 years ago. She offers courses in "Chinese Brush Painting with Silent Sitting Meditation" and "T'ai Chi Moving Meditation" to laypersons and Sisters. The practice and discipline of these arts help to balance mind, body, and spirit. She has also learned Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, and uses it when preparing for liturgy celebrations at our North American headquarters.

"Mission for me means receptivity and openness … listening for and being moved by the Spirit as it makes itself known within me, through you, and through the events surrounding our everyday lives," she shares.
