| Sister Daphne Norden Sister Daphne is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.
British Sister Daphne worked for 7 years teaching biochemistry in the University of London, and 15 years in the University of Zimbabwe, before joining the Medical Mission Sisters. She also was involved with the Movement for a Better World, promoting the value of Christian community. After participating in an interdenominational hospital chaplaincy team in London, Sister went to Holy Family Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, where she worked in hospital ministry and with nursing students for 7 years. She spent a year studying in Chicago, then returned to England in 1989. She also has served as District Coordinator for England, and as a member of our General Assembly. Having edited one of our newsletters when she was in Pakistan, Sister Daphne offered to produce “Medical Mission News,” the magazine used in England to keep in touch with benefactors and share our Sisters’ stories. She also edits the British website, http://medicalmissionsisters-england.org Sister Daphne visits British parishes to give talks and conduct mission appeals. “I really enjoy the contact with the parishes, to say nothing of being able to travel around the country,” she shares. “We use the readings of the day as a background to our talk, and explain current issues we meet overseas and also here at home,” she says. “We also challenge parishioners to look at their own responsibility for mission in their parish…and invite them to be involved in campaigning for justice.” As Chair of the Sisters’ Mission Committee in England, Sister Daphne organizes most of the appeals work for the 15 different institutes of Sisters involved. She also is a founding and current member of the Catholic Mission Union Executive. In addition, Sister is a member of the Bishops’ Committee for Overseas Mission, advisory to the Bishops’ Conference, and a representative on the ecumenical body concerned with mission. “All this has given me many new friends,” she says, “and made it possible for me to be part of many valuable networks essential to the Medical Mission Sisters’ mission.”
