| Sister Cathy Ouellette Sister Cathy is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer.
Born into a Catholic family and raised in Long Island, New York, Sister Cathy graduated from the School of Nursing at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, New York. After joining our Community, she went on to study Anesthesia at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia. Sister Cathy’s first overseas assignment was to Venezuela, where she served for 9 years in our Holy Family Hospitals in Caripito and Judibana. “From the start, I felt right at home,” she recalls. “It was a time to get to know the language and the culture and the people, to experience their warmth, hospitality and friendship, and to learn from them.” After a time of renewal, Sister Cathy was assigned to Amman, Jordan, to help in the administration of Muashir Hospital for 3 years. She remembers, “Our Medical Mission Sister community there was so rich, being from 5 nations…we were able to laugh and cry together, support one another, enjoy our times together and form bonds, bringing much joy and unity.” Next, Sister Cathy earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Puerto Rico. She was then elected to our central leadership team, and spent 5 years in Rome. For the past 27 years, Sister Cathy has been in mission in Peru, involved in pastoral work in both Arequipa and Callao. “I have worked with the women and children in a variety of projects: popular education, catechesis, formation of Christian community, and nutrition. I have learned so much, and continue learning all the time, being evangelized by the people, grateful for all I have received and the opportunities to share their joys, sorrows, hopes and celebrations.
