| SisterJosephine Brannigan Sister Josephine is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to others in the spirit of Jesus the Healer. Born and raised in South Shields, England, Sister Josephine completed her nursing studies in Newcastle on Tyne. She worked in New York for four years, then returned to England and joined the Medical Mission Sisters. Sister Josephine’s first overseas assignment was to Amman, Jordan, where she was part of an international group of our Sisters who opened a new hospital. Her next mission was to Holy Family Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. She then returned to England, where she became certified as a midwife, and served as District Coordinator until 1980. Returning to Ministry in Pakistan, Sister Josephine served for 8 years at St. Teresa's Hospital in Mirpurkhas, Sindh. She then repatriated to England, and worked in a home for women with learning difficulties. In collaboration with the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Josephine helped to establish a residential home for frail older people in Hexham, Northumberland, in the center of England. “I was the deputy manager and a Sister of Mercy was the manager,” she recalls. “The burden of the work was the sense of loss and diminishment that pervaded among the residents…we tried to keep the atmosphere friendly and informal, and encouraged independence among them.” She often received feedback that it was the best home the residents had seen, and it became renowned as such in the Hexham area. In 2004, Sister Josephine was elected District Coordinator for England. She now lives at our District House in London. “Three of us were nominated to leadership,” she explains. “We formed the executive committee and divided leadership tasks among us…I deal with the main administrative duties on a day-to-day basis. I also am the one to attend the meetings that go with the designated leadership role.”
