Sister Alice Marier Sister Alice is one of 650 Medical Mission Sisters in 19 nations trying to be present to those in need in the spirit of Jesus the healer. Born in Canada, Sister Alice entered the Medical Mission Sisters in 1947. She received her R.N. degree in 1956, and later earned a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Quebec in Montreal. She spent nearly 45 years in Venezuela, and now works with Guatemalan refugees in her parish community in southern Florida. For her, the opportunity to work in a parish with Spanish-speaking people is ideal. About 20,000 refugees and immigrants from Guatemala live in Sr. Alice's diocese. "They are very hard workers and grateful people," she says. For many of them, "To be able to read the Bible is their greatest desire." Literary work is a priority for Sr. Alice. "To uncover the world of the word is for me like taking off shackles, opening their lives to completely new realities," she explains. Now in her mid-seventies, she is also very involved in a weekly prayer group, in the Marriage Encounter program, and in home visits to parishioners. "I have often begged the Lord
never to leave me without work," she says with humor. "I must say, God delights in taking me at my word!"
Sr. Alice frequently visits a small chapel that is close to her home. "It is a great gift, this small and simple place where I can find God in perfect silence, where contemplation (which was something quite unknown to me) is now made possible," she shares. "It is the first time in my life that I have experienced this, and I can experience it daily ... it brings the greatest joy to my life here in Florida."
