Justice Concerns
Because we believe justice is
integral
to healing, Medical Mission Sisters are committed to:
Looking at the world from the
perspective of those made poor and from the viewpoint of what is of
benefit to them, making choices accordingly.
Continuing to strive with others of
like mind – from the grassroots to policy-making bodies in local,
national and international spheres – to work toward justice and
the restoration of human dignity.
We are currently focusing our efforts on migration in all its ramifications - the movement of peoples within and between countries. Within this theme, we support:
- Worldwide efforts to cancel the unpayable debts of the poorest countries, so the limited money they do have can go to their own nation's development.
- Women's issues, including trafficking of women and violence against women.
- Legislation to provide universal, affordable health care to all peoples in all nations, including the United States.
- Ecological efforts to ensure safe water, food, and air for people around the world.
- Participating in the People's Health Movement and its People's Charter for Health, the largest global consensus on health in decades.
- Educational efforts and prayerful actions toward understanding diversity and attaining peace in our troubled world.
- The United Nation's work to fully and globally implement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Earth Charter, and The Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.
Medical Mission Sisters also continue our involvement in and advocacy for issues related to Peace; Non-violence; Gun Control; and Elimination of Capital Punishment.
Our Community has consultative status
with ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. This
council coordinates the UN’s work in economic, social, cultural,
educational, health and related fields.
Our Alliance
for Justice Office, directed by Sister Janet Gottschalk, helps to keep us informed of political and
governmental actions that are negatively affecting those with whom we
are in mission. Medical Mission
Sisters also are members of Network
and Sisters
OnLine.
