| Faith Formation in Venezuela The faith formation work of our Sisters in Venezuela is one of the hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. The predominantly Catholic country of Venezuela is the 6th largest in Latin America. Nearly 12 million people (almost 50% of the population) live below the poverty line.
Young people make up a high percent of the population; educating them in their faith is a challenge, since many cannot afford to purchase books.
Our Sisters in Venezuela have established their first priority as: "the formation, education, organization, and preparation of people, to help them look for alternatives and create networks." In the city of Barquisimeto, they are actively involved in pastoral education and formation for about 2000 families in 2 barrios, "12 de Octobre" and "La Virena." Many young people in the barrios want to learn more about their faith. For the past 5 years, the Center for Formation has been a place where they and their families can gather for meetings, Bible Study, Marriage Encounter, etc. This year, through the help of Medical Mission Sisters' donors, the Center will be equipped with a library, providing the youth and their families with a space for catechism classes, reading, and reflection. This will be the only library in the barrio. Volunteers will hold workshops and seminars to educate catechists and animators in their faith.
In addition, a small chapel built by volunteers will be furnished as a quiet space where people can pray, reflect, and worship. The volunteer leaders will hold periodic times of reflection and evaluation throughout the year. "If the present leaders are well prepared, they are willing to prepare the coming generation, and every year more responsibility is taken over by the new groups," explains Sister Miriam Kuruvinakunnel, who is the Project Coordinator.
