At the U.N. The work of Sister Philo Morris at the United Nations is one of the hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. "I believe we are the voice of the voiceless in an arena where policies are made which affect every living being on our planet earth," says Sister Philo Morris as she represents Medical Mission Sisters at the United Nations. Sister Philo, who has worked at the UN since 2001, is from District North India. She has a Master's Degree in Law, and practiced law in Pune district court. She also has 2 Bachelor's Degrees, in Law and in Commerce, and served as District Treasurer in North India. She has experience as a medical technologist and hospital secretary.
Financing for Development (FFD) is the primary focus of Sister Philo's work at the UN. She works with other religious, and members of non-government organizations (NGOs). She is also co-chair of the Earth Values Caucus. Earlier this year, Sister Philo along with several other NGOs started the NGO Working Group on FFD. "I began mobilizing this group in February, 2004, and today we are 42 members in all," she says. "The majority of members in this group are religious NGO Representatives at the UN." They meet every month, and have formed 3 sub-committees on Trade, Debt, and Domestic Resources.
The Commission on Sustainable Development is Sister Philo's second focus at the UN. "The theme of this year's session was Water, Sanitation, and Human Settlements," she explains. Her third area of focus is The Commission on Social Development. She is also a member of the NGO sub-committee for Eradication of Poverty. Sister Philo attends UN and NGO meetings in all of the above areas of involvement at the UN, giving presentations and publishing reports of the proceedings. She also participates in the monthly meetings of religious at the UN. "The work at the UN continues to be challenging for me, and I am very grateful to the Society for entrusting this important aspect of our mission to me," she shares. "I make every effort to voice all that we are doing in different parts of the world, both at the UN meetings and among NGOs." "We are constantly making our voices heard, in an effort to influence our policy-makers to make the changes needed for bringing about another world, which is possible."
