Thrift Shop Volunteering at our Philadelphia Thrift Shop is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. The Medical Mission Sisters Thrift Shop at our North American headquarters in Philadelphia is a place where many people contribute to our mission. The shop is open from September to June, Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Here we receive donations of new or "gently used" items from our neighbors and friends. These are very reasonably priced, and sold to the public to raise money for our healing mission. About 15 volunteers help to sort, display, and sell clothing, bric-a-brac, kitchenware, linens, small appliances, and many other useable items. Our Sisters on renewal enjoy seeing the Thrift Shop's newest offerings … and those living in the Philadelphia area find it a great place to shop. Sisters Clarita Hackman, Silva Zuzek, and Vera Sheehan are among those who have enjoyed volunteering at the Thrift Shop, which has been in existence for over 35 years.
Sister Paula D'Errico, who has volunteered at the Shop for the past 17 years, says, "I can be present to the people in so many very practical ways. I like to help them find what they're looking for, listen to their problems, and offer some suggestions." "It is wonderful to hear the gratitude of those who say, 'We could never afford to buy these items (clothing, etc.) at the retail stores, for our children and ourselves,'" she adds. "Here, mission and ministry become one entity."
