Shalom Rehabilitation Center Journeying with people who are chemically dependent is one of the hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. In Nagaland, North East India, Sisters Philo Mylady and Mariette Thakadiyel are in mission at the Shalom Rehabilitation Center. Sister Mariette is a pioneer in this project, which was initiated by the Diocese of Kohima 13 years ago. Sister Philo, who has been active for 4 years, describes this ministry as, "Challenging … it requires strong faith and perseverance." Focusing on substance abuse, the Shalom Rehabilitation Center's mission is to free addicts and their families from their addictive thinking, and support them in their efforts to stay clean. The detoxification facility accommodates 20 residents at any given time. "Recovery and rehabilitation happens to each person at their own pace," our Sisters reflect. Treatment for the recovering person includes self-discovery, behavior modification, counseling, and career guidance. In their fieldwork, our Sisters also encourage screening tests for vulnerable persons, and for potential HIV/AIDS carriers. In addition, they reach out to persons with HIV/AIDS and their families and community, with ongoing visits and counseling. Other programs offered through the Shalom Center include a correspondence course on substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, training of teachers, and counseling and networking with other non-government organizations. Last year, 25 institutions and 5 village communities in different parts of Nagaland were contacted about these programs. Our Sisters in this area are acknowledged as pioneers in working with chemical dependency and HIV/AIDS. The Shalom Rehabilitation Center provides in-service training for other religious, and for lay people who are interested in such involvements. "With faith and trust in God and with a daring spirit, we continue our ministry to the most neglected," our Sisters say. "We realize that God has strengthened us to go forward with courage and a sense of total commitment to our mission."
