Empowering Women in
North East India

Working for the empowerment of women is one of the hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today.

Over 60% of the tribal women in North East India are illiterate, underfed, or exploited. Working with the North East Diocesan Social Forum (NEDSF), Sister Mary Illimoottil has helped the women to become more aware, organize themselves in groups, and develop leaders. "We aim to ensure women equal status in all spheres of life," she says.

In 2000, the NEDSF began training programs, workshops, and seminars for women at regional and diocesan levels. "They awakened in the women a spirit to come together, to reflect, and to plan for their destiny, as well as tackling issues related to their very survival," Sister Mary explains. Women leaders in each diocese conducted over 100 programs that first year, instilling in the participants gender awareness, confidence, and a greater knowledge of women's rights.

The project grew, and many self-help groups were formed. Some of the women leaders became elected to local government positions, addressing such community issues as health, water, alcoholism, and education.

In 2003, more training programs were held for women leaders at the grassroots level, covering such topics as: legal awareness, globalization, social analysis, cooperatives, mushroom cultivation, and new ways to generate income. "These programs have helped the women to acquire skills, and the confidence to go ahead with enthusiasm, courage, hope, and determination," says Sister Mary. Some of the women leaders have developed small fisheries and poultry farms. "They are now able to make additional income for their family, as well as improve their nutrition," says Sister Mary.

She adds, "It is the women's hope in their own strength, and their solidarity with each other in liberating themselves from oppression and discrimination, that unites them."
