Celebrating 260 years in mission

The 5 Medical Mission Sisters from North America who are celebrating Diamond and Golden Jubilees on February 11, 2007, represent a combined 260 years in mission.

Five Medical Mission Sisters from North America celebrate the 60-and 50-year anniversaries of their First Profession of Vows on February 11, 2007. Please join us in congratulations, prayer, and thanks.

60-year Jubilarian:

Sister Camillus Healy, from Newton, Iowa, served in Ghana, West Africa, for 44 years. She ministered as a nurse, midwife, primary health care provider and basic health teacher, and helped to build hospitals and clinics in isolated areas. She now lives in Bethesda, Maryland, providing support to the TeenStar Program.

50-year Jubilarians:

Sister Joan Foley, who was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, has held a number of leadership positions within our Community. She was in mission in Pakistan for 15 years. She also worked in community health with the poor in North Carolina and South Georgia, and also did refugee work in Thailand. In 1991, she founded the Connections Job Development/Placement Program in New Port Richey, Florida, which she continues to direct.

Sister Maria Hornung, who was raised in New Orleans and is a pharmacist by profession, has served in Uganda, Kenya, and the United States. She also has held a number of leadership positions within our Community. Now living in Philadelphia, she is Coordinator of Interfaith Education at the Interfaith Center of Pennsylvania, and has authored a book on Interreligious Dialogue. She also coordinates our Lifewright Program for Sisters on renewal and retreat.

Sister Patrice McSweeney, born in Columbia, South America, was in mission in Venezuela for 42 years. A nurse and pastoral worker, she has cared for the sick and reached out to the poor, the handicapped, and to families in need. She now lives in Philadelphia, where her involvements include working in our Mission Development Center and teaching English as a second language.

Sister Regina Rowan, from Philadelphia, PA, served in Venezuela as a medical technologist for 8 years. She was an associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University’s College of Allied Health Sciences for many years, and also worked at our North American headquarters in Philadelphia. She moved to Boston in 1980, where she was on our Finance Committee and has been Executive Director of our Office for Responsible Investment. She recently relocated to the Philadelphia area.
